Balloch O' Dee Campsite

Kirkcowan, Newton Stewart, Dumfries & Galloway DG8 0ET

Business Details

Balloch O' Dee is a beautiful, dog friendly campsite nestling in stunning countryside on the edge of the Galloway national forest park.

In recent years there has been a trend towards 'Glamping' sites and while we do offer some alternative accomodation on site, the overall experience we hope, still has a 'proper' camping feel.

We are not a glamping site, but a traditional campsite with some different options for you. After camping all our lives, we have tried to create the sort of campsite that we would like to camp on: a relaxed, interesting and safe place for the family where, hopefully, you can get back to what matters in life.

The main camping field covers about 4 acres so there is plenty of space and you won't be squashed in. One of the things we loved about camping was sitting around a campfire watching the stars and so we have built lots of stone fire pits for you to use in the main camping field and you are welcome to have a campfire whenever you like. Each fire pit has a pot stand for you to use to cook on and firewood is always available on site. This is 'proper' camping!

We also have new large hard standing pitches with Electric HOOKUP for Motorhomes or Touring caravans. These are available all year round and have fire pits if you would like to sit out by a fire in the evening. They are also close to the amenities for convenience including grey water and chemical toilet disposal points.

Facilities all free
We have 5 immaculate toilets on-site in two separate rooms. All individually decorated and hand-painted with artwork from our favorite local artist, Emily. Look out for the beautifully painted wildflowers and the stunningly painted bugs and beetles! At night the loos are lit with fairy lights and incense keeps them smelling exotically fresh. As well as the lovely toilets we have two hot showers. These have large rainfall showerheads ensuring that you have a truly enjoyable shower.

We have a Campers Cookhouse on-site for all campers to use which has a log burning range cooker with oven and hotplate, a BBQ and a large candlelit dining table and chairs so if the weather sets in or you just want to get together with other campers then this is a great place to be. We have another large shelter in the main camping field for all to use. This has some comfy chairs and sofas in as well as a 5m long dining table and benches. This is a lovely communal space for just socialising and dining/cooking with other campers and is very useful when the weather takes a turn for the worse.

Rose Hippy Vintage Caravan
Rose Hippy has been one of our latest projects. She is a beautiful old Royal Caravelle Touring caravan. In its day, it was known as the 'Rolls Royce' of touring caravans. Rose Hippy sleeps two people, with a similar double bed as you get in most touring caravans. Its slightly smaller the a standard double but perfectly fine for two adults and it can be converted into additional seating if required. The cooker, fridge and toilet have been removed to create more space and extra seating so guests would use the facilities on site. We are building a new covered cooking and seating area for the Vintage Vans to use so guests will be able to cook and eat under cover in relative comfort.

Bluebell
Bluebell is a wooden vintage caravan built from scratch. It is very popular with campers and we hope it will continue to be a lovely asset to our site for many years to come. It has a full king size bed raised off the floor with another double futon mattress underneath, ideal for kids or even another couple.

The Roundhouse
The Round House is totally eco-friendly and is completely off-grid. This means there is no electricity in the building so you will need to bring candles or tea lights or other forms of lighting with you, like you would if you were camping. It has a big log burner to keep you warm though so don't panic! This sleeps 4 in one King size bed and two fold away camp beds and is lovely and cozy with a large log-burning stove, wooden floors, rugs, comfy old chairs and lots of bits and bobs.

The Bothy
The Bothy was originally one of the old cow sheds and we have almost entirely rebuilt it. It was a labour of love over the long dark winter months a few years back. It will sleep 5 comfortably and has everything you need for a lovely relaxing stay. All you need to bring are sleeping bags or duvets as sheets and pillow cases are provided.

The heart of The Bothy is a large log burning range cooker with oven and hot plates for you to cook on and it keeps The Bothy really cosy even in the depths of winter. It also has a large rustic dining table and chairs, old oak dressers and comfy armchairs. There is one double bed with a single bunk above it on one side of the room and two single bunks on the other side.

The Ranch House
The Ranch House sleeps 6 people. It has a hand-built superking size 6 poster bed and two sets of bunk beds dowstairs with stairs leading to another double bed upstairs. It has its own wetroom with shower, toilet and sink. There is a large log burning range cooker in the main room with a full-size oven and three hot plates to cook on. There is also a second log burner with cooking hot plate in the small conservatory at the front. It has a microwave kettle etc. plus usual sheets, pillows etc - Just bring your own sleeping bag/duvet and towels.

We are a very dog friendly site (We have five dogs) and you are welcome to bring your dog to Balloch O' Dee.
