Nestled in the heart of the Lowther Hills the Hopetoun Arms hotel is a grade two listed building and is the highest residential hotel in Scotland, sitting 1297ft above sea level.

Set in a quiet rural location it's a perfect stop off point if traveling north or south and a great place for a nice relaxing break.

The Hopetoun itself is steeped in history with mentions from Dorothy Wordsworth in her book "The grand tour of Scotland" published in 1804.

Leadhills village itself has a heritage trail which will have you visit such delights as John Taylors Grave, who died in 1770 at the remarkable age of 137 and the Curfew Bell which was rung to inform the miners of their shift changes.

Although we are in a rural setting we are only forty five minutes from Glasgow and just over one hour to Edinburgh and Carlisle.

The village has the oldest subscription library in the UK which is open to visitors and the highest golf course in Scotland situated just behind the hotel.

Our rooms consist of twin, doubles, family (sleeps 4) and a quad room (sleeps 4). All are ensuite and are spread across the ground floor, first floor and attic (no height restrictions). Most of the rooms are dog-friendly and all have free Wi-Fi.

Facilities include: freeview TV, CD/DVD players, ironing, hairdryers and tea/coffee making facilities.

The hotel has a bar, lounge, restaurant and parking. We have a side entrance to the lounge area, which is suitable for wheelchair users. We also have a ground floor room which has some wheel chair facilities including a walk in shower room and grab rails.

Local attractions include the Leadhills & Wanlockhead Railway, a narrow gauge railway which operates between Scotland's highest villages, Leadhills and Wanlockhead. There is also the Leadhills Miners Library, built in 1741 and is the oldest subscription library in the British Isles. It is also the second highest at 1400 feet above sea level. Many of the volumes acquired in the first century of the library's life are still extant. Visit the Leadhills museum and hit the slopes with the Lowther Hills Ski Club.
